View Full Version : I hate my job rant...but what else is new?

Grrr, I am so pissed off right now. I hate my job. And my bosses. And the work I do.

Several people with whom I work have asked me WHY my boss and supervisor always treat me like I am an idiot, have no brain and just started here yesterday. And it's not like they asked me in a span of a week or something, it's been happening for some time. Since I really don't deal with the boss/supervisor all day every day, I just put on my headphones and do my work. Then they are all about me doing my best and bettering myself. I hate this job, so why do I want to better myself? I'll do the best I can, but anything above and beyond? NO WAY. Then there's the fact that my supervisor is not a manager; she is in the same classification as I am, but since she's been here longer, they let her act like she was a manager and train people. Then she comes down hard on them when they screw up. One day, she smacked my desk and yelled "ENOUGH!" when she thought I'd been on the internet too long. WTF? My boss asked me to help set up for someone's retirement tea yesterday WHILE I was eating my lunch. Um, that's MY time. After she commented about me helping (so she never really asked, per se) I said, Oh do you need help? (totally playing dumb here) and she gave me a snotty answer like, Of course I do! I replied with, Well, you just have to ask. I didn't rush through my lunch, when my 1/2 hr was up, then I got up and helped her. Then during the party, I asked her a question and she got all snippy w/ me. Hey lady, that's the last time I do a favor for you. I understand that throwing a party can be stressful but you don't have to be a bitch. She tries to be my mom when I have a wonderfully great one already, she gives me silly advice when I didn't even ask (so does my pseudo-supervisor). The other young staff people do not get treated like this. I used to be chronically late and got into trouble for that (which was to be expected) but I have TOTALLY improved my ways and they haven't. I don't even feel I can talk to them about it, because they'll say stuff about my work not being up to par. They associate good work with priviledges and niceties. It's not that I deliberately sabotage my work, but this stuff is not exactly what my brain can handle. It's too technical for me, remembering to put this number here if you want to show the book has more than one copy but THIS number if it's a multivolume set, etc. Too many rules to remember--it's like science and math.

I'm just tired of being bored, doing repetitive tasks, treated like a child and not getting anything out of work.

Ouch... i'm sorry Jen :( ... Evil Yale supervisors and pseudo-supervisors are rearing their ugly heads again i see. I was just talking to someone else in my office who feels the same way- except she's older and gets treated like that!!

I think where i am they've gotten the hint i just don't care anymore and am not planning on being a lifer... that's probally what it is... they KNOW you won't be there 20 years from now...

Ugh, Jen, this really does sound like a nasty work environment for you. It's like you're "out of their league," to use the dating metaphor. This job is beneath you.

Thanks Coll and WB :) I know I've complained before, but this is IT. I'm really pissed. And I'm looking for new jobs, but there's not that much out there, of course!

Are you pursuing the paralegal program? How's that coming?

pisces2473
09-09-2004, 12:20 PM
Not pursuing that right now...I need a break from school until I really know what I want to do. My psychologist recommended that I look for a new job and try school later, when I'm in a better job and know what I want to do.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that hates their job. God I hate it here..grrr....my supervisor SUCKS and she's soo nasty to me treats me like I"m a freakin' idiot. Does your read yoru email you sent to your boyfriend, print it out and then has a meeting with you about it? Yup mine did. And she's tried to get my e fired as well, but then I looked her right in the eye and told h er she couldn't fire me for looking for a job HA :P So yes I think most of us are miserable at our job, seems to be a common theme. Just keep on pouding the pavement, looking for jobs. Spend all your free time after work on it, put all of your energy into it and something will break eventually, at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Thanks Lynsey :) It sucks to look, but you're right. I do need to give it more effort.

This job situations sounds really unhealthy. I would basically ask what you could do that would make them more satisfied with your work. If they give you something, document it, and work on it. If thay can't give you something concrete, then flat out ask if they think your are doing a decent job, and then document that too.
Then look for another position. And next time snippy biatch gets in your face, politely tell her that you do not appreciate being spoken to in that manner. It usually gets their goat.

They've told me they want less errors, me to take more time with my work (but we're under a deadline, so that makes no sense!), and I have been working on it. Granted, they aren't up my ass every 2 minutes telling me I did something wrong, but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. But the thing w/ the error rate--it's like I have to remember 200 directions and I cannot keep everything straight. My brain is not wired for that kind of stuff. I'm smart, but not at this! I just found an interesting job and will be working on a letter for that tonight!

What job is this, Jen?

It's for an educational publisher...

EDUCATIONAL PUBLISHER moving to beautiful new building, in Shelton, seeks writer with expertise in reading, science and social studies, prolific and computer literate.

Doesn't say much, but why not try?

Jen
With the rules----can you put together a spreadsheet that would list these rules that you could then use as a reference when you need to look something up rather than relying on your memory only?

This is something you could do then show your supervisors and say hey maybe this would help new hires, or the people who are here currently, what do you think?

Might give you some brownie points while breaking your margin of error.

then I looked her right in the eye and told her she couldn't fire me for looking for a job

Hate to tell you this, but yes she can. If you're doing your personal business on company time? She may have reason and/or ability to fire you. It's specifically in my company's handbook (about doing your personal business at work - balancing your checkbook, surfing the internet, etc.)

Jen - totally hear you on the situation. What gets me through the day? Knowing that I'm looking for another job to get away from this shitty place...while everyone else will still be stuck there b/c they have a family to support, need the income, or can't move elsewhere.

To those people (who deserve it, of course), I say, shove THAT up your ass! ;)

I've talked to them about this and what they said is that some of the rules aren't very clear cut. So I'm at a loss here! LOL

I did put together a bunch of things from the Library of Congress website into a 3 ring binder as a "guidebook" and put it in our "common area" for everyone to use. And I made sure EVERYONE got an email about it.

Well, if some of them arent clear cut can you leave those seperate and at least put the ones that are into something to use?

Lots of pieces of my job arent clear cut either (which annoys me because gray area can always be disputed, and is around here---for some reason I typically make the wrong judgement calls)
But----the stuff that is clear cut I have documented to use when a dispute comes up-----it typically saves my butt and prevents me from having to ask the same questions 300 times and annoy my bosses....

Good luck, its Friday.

Yes, I do have "cheat sheets" to look at but some situations only come up every few months and I'm the type of person that's "if I don't use it, I lose it." They expect me to remember EVERY LITTLE DETAIL about this stuff. It's not interesting, so why would I remember? LOL

Yes, thank god it's Friday--only 7 hours to go!

The stuff I do doesnt always hold my interest either but I have to remember even the stuff Ive only used once because questions always come up----and guess who has to answer the inquiries?

Its tough, but hey....we all go through it.

Wow, I'm amazed to see how many of us are so sick of our jobs. So sick, to the point we no longer want to show up. I often wonder what's the deal? Any ideas?

Yes. That is why, sadly. Maybe now you all can understand how dead my job is. Literally sitting here all day. No interruptions like phone calls or anything.

What do you do? How has your luck been in looking for other jobs? As for me I'm too determined and stubborn to not look for a job. I did notice that the job search is easier if you know people, but it's all about selling yourself to people. As for me I'm waiting to hear back about a job in San Diego ;) Although I'm not sure I can take it with my boyfriend not being any to move with me :( Such a hard decision especially since it pays almost twice as much as I make now, plus it's in San Diego and it's a job I think I'd actually enjoy :( See what boys do to us girls!!!

I work at Yale University in the main library, working on the online databases (the online card catalog). It's so boring, I just type in call #'s and review the records against the old school cards from the drawers that most of you remember from being little kids. I have a degree in American Studies, which means I know a little about a lot of things. I have journalism experience, both on the collegiate level and a local paper, I interned at my state's municipal league--I am not a dummy! I deserve better than this! But the search hasn't been that great. There's not much out there first of all, and then things have been filled shortly after I've applied. I have to keep at it...
