Hi Notr2d2,
I'm always looking for good stuff to listen to, and with the way the record industries are these days- it's pretty tough- so thank you for bringing it up. I love music ALOT and it's impossible for me to list ALL of my favs, however I've managed to find a few currents-
I'm a HUGE fan of Tori Amos. I'm also falling in love with the White Stripes. Kristen Hersh and Jewel are good. I've always like the Phish/Grateful Dead stuff but Sea and Cake is good as well. Starsailor, Pete Yorn, Weezer, Zero7,Portishead, Basement Jaxx, Grove Armada (I'm still exploring that genre)... I have a long list- but most of it isn't current. If you like Nikka Costa, see her live- her CD is good- but her shows are excellent (and surprisingly cheaper- however I couldn't stomach a Britney Spears' show just to see her though). I like most stuff if it's GOOD- quality. Lyrics are my mainstay- I also like soul and hip hop as much as I like bluegrass and jazz- but rap has only bugged me for the last 15 years.
One of my faves of all time is the Pump Up the Volume cd.
What are you into?

I'm always interested in people's taste in music.
I'm excited--I finally found someone not only heard of Nikka Costa, but is also a fan :)
My music runs the gammet. I was a dancer for 10 years (1st grade to junior year of high school) and I played a classical instrument (cello), and recently I've started to take Latin dancing lessons. I guess you can say I've been exposed to many types of music.
My favorite group is the Indigo Girls. I finally saw them in concert! I am looking at my CD collection now and I have everything from Jon Mayer, to Jay-Z (the unplugged album), to Bob Marley, to Marc Cohn, to Tori Amos, to Harry Connick Jr, to Mozart. I appreciate either 1) intellegent lyrics, 2) good flow/voice, 3)something to make me smile or 4) a combination of 1-3. I'm not that pretentious (sp?) when it comes to music... but I do think Eminem has gotten more than his deserved 15 minutes of fame :D
I have also discovered a "new" group... The Red House Painters. Their song "Have You Forgotten", was on the "Vanilla Sky" soundtrack. If you like Elliot Smit, this group is for you!
Don't knock all hip-hop/R&B. I'm not a big fan of Eminem, but I love The Roots, Common, and MC Solaar. They're music is more along the lines of acid jazz. I also believe that Jill Scott is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters to ever come out.
Anyway, I could write a 100 page book about this topic, but I'm always on the look for a new sound :D
Have fun everyone!

Hey, thanks for replying! It's very cool to hear what you all had to say! Yeah, music is huge part of my life too. I listen to it constantly; even when I'm walking around. A lot people know me as the guy w/ big headphones walking around campus. was just listening to Pantera up to the computer lab. Even listen to music to just relax; horrible tv reception, barely rent movies, and no computer in the apartment. Heck, as some of you may know I can't picture myself doing anything else other being a musician!
From the responses I got here; I definitely have different music tastes. But I definitely noticed that you guys share common interests too which is cool. If I had to pick favorites: Depeche Mode and Faith No More. Some other bands I dig are Pitchshifter, Cold, Korn, New Order, 311, A Perfect Circle, Deftones, Rage Against the Machine, Rollins Band, Sevendust, Slipknot, Soulfly, Staind, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Taproot, Tool, and many more… Too many to name! Thanks!

Nice, a 311 and Sevendust fan!! Not many of them around!!
I'm I guess what you would call a MUT when it comes to music because I'm into everything. Before I get into that, I just want to say if they're any Mac users out there, definitely purchase the ipod! If you haven't heard of it, it's basically an MP3 walk man... 1000 songs in your pocket? Remember the commercial with that dork dancin' around? Anyway, I have one and it's sick!! I take it to the gym, running, and have used it at parties too!! You can plug this bad boy into a stereo and just let it play!!
For my music preferences... well, it ranges from hard core rock to Alternative to ganstah rap to hip hop to techno to classic rock to the oldies. I think country is the only kind of music that I just don't have any interest in! If I had to choose one band from each category... hmmm... Sevendust is just ridiculous... have seen them in NYC a half dozen times. Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre... I'm starting to really get into Nickleback... gotta love Led Zep... and for oldies... can't go wrong with the Temptations!

I love a Perfect Circle- saw them in 1995 when they toured with NIN. The lead, I know he was in tool but I'm reallyl bad with names- had this massive long wig on and sang his stuff while he moshed and twisted his hair in circles. I went totally sober- but somehow felt completely stoned watching them. Good stuff I tell you...

Music!
What fun.
I'm a huge Ani DiFranco fan. I've seen her live only once though. I also love Liz Phair. I really really am getting into Norah Jones though.
John Mayer and Jack Johnson are also in my CD player a lot.
My music taste ranges. I'll also listen to my Ella Fitzgerald CDs and sometimes I'll be really embarassing and listen to Eden's Crush or The Spice Girls. They make me happy.
Eva Cassidy is also worth checking out. Her version of "Time After Time" is really haunting and beautiful. IMO

Glad to hear someone else likes the Indigo Girls! :) I really enjoy their lyrics and there seems to be something about them where they seem to put their heart and soul into their music. Saw them live as well...they surprised everyone by playing such a long set and it was awesome!
Other music tastes I have - they vary so much! I listen to a little of everything - oldies, rap, hip hop, R&B, 80s, soft rock, classic rock, rock, even a little country :O!! :) If you look at my music collection and try to determine what I like...well, I guess you'd find a little bit of everything.
Although, as I hinted about above, I have to say I tend to like those with lasting impressions in their music and/or their lyrics: Billy Joel, Indigo Girls, Counting Crows, Ben Folds Five, Journey, Aerosmith, Jennifer Nettles, Pink (her recent album) are a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

Is "Crazy" by Seal.
"... and we're never going to survive, unless we get a little crazy".
The man has such a beautiful voice.

I listen to a lot of music - it's my life! I feel like my tastes might be a little different from what other people posted. Anyway, here it goes:
I'm a huge fan of Mariah Carey - I have been since 1991. Other people: Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Elvis Presley.
I am getting into older music as of late, though: I enjoy listening to it. I recently saw Paul McCartney in concert - wow!
As embarrassing as this may sound, I grew up on disco (how could people our age NOT have had disco playing at some point???) - ABBA, the Bee Gees, Donna Summers, Diana Ross, and the whole Saturday Night Fever soundtrack! I still love it.
Personally, my favorite decade of music is the 1990s. I just love a lot of things that came out between 1990-1995, but after that, it started to tank. I'm not one for the boybands - I'm proud to say I do not own one single Backstreet Boys or N*Sync album, LOL!

I'm surprised that no one (including me) has mentioned U2. I believe that "The Joshua Tree" is one of the best albums to come out in 20 years.
There are two songs by them that exemplify a QLC. One is from The Joshua Tree-- "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and one off their latest album-- "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of It." The later one still makes me cry.
Since I've already realized a dream to see the Indigo Girls live, the next one is going to a U2 concert. It may be expensive... but they're completely worth it :)
I also like bands with longevity (sp?). We may not be talking about NSYNC in 20 years... but we will be talking about U2's pioneering music for 50 years to come :)
Just my two cents. Thanks again for starting this thread. The best way to bond... discussing music :D

I don't know why I didn't think of U2...I have their greatest hits (1980-1990?) and it's awesome. That is a dream of mine as well, jleigh - to see them in concert. They were playing near where I live but they sold out in a heartbeat...so, maybe one day...

Music definitely bonds people, that's for sure. I firmly believe music is the universal language.
But I don't want to psychobabble, LOL! I agree with you about N*Sync - I highly doubt they will be around for much longer. With the exception of the Beatles, I really can't think of a group that was marketed as a "boy band" that has stood the test of time. Give Justin Timberlake a guitar and see what he does with it, LOL!
I like several of U2's songs. My favorites are "With Or Without You," "Lemon," (remember that one?!?!?!), "One," (that is such a beautiful song!), and "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of."

This is a great thread!
My all time favorite artist is Bruce Springsteen. Love his music, with and without the E-Street Band, althougth I am thrilled about the new album and tour.
Other artists...Don Henley (with the Eagles too), U2, Alanis Morrisette, Sarah MacLachlin, and I love the Indigo Girls as well.
The thing I love about music is you can pick your mood. Anything will suit it. It is the universal language.

hmm... so many to choose from.
"No Such Thing"-- John Mayer
"Ghost"-- Indigo Girls
"Watershed"-- Indigo Girls
"Sweet Surrender"-- Sarah McLachlan
"The Light"-- Common
"Always Have To Steal My Kisses"--Ben Harper
"Stone Soul Picnic"--Laura Nyro
"Stuck In A Momen You Can't Get Out Of"--U2
"Where The Streets Have No Name"--U2
These are just off the top of my head :D I have a question to pose to all of you. If you had to make a soundtrack to your life, what songs would you put on there. It seems to me that eveyrone that has posted has been extremely moved by music. I'm just curious.
Again... great thread!

I listen to alot of hard rock and metal too, notr2d2. I just went to see Danzig a couple of weeks ago. (I'm in the NYC area) I like KMFDM, Slayer, Anthrax, old Metallica, Megadeth, Ministry,Black Sabbath, G n' R, The Clash, Sisters of Mercy, etc. As well as lighter stuff like David Bowie and Pink Floyd. I also have a thing for Wu Tang as far as hip-hop goes.
I find it kind of hard to find educated people who like metal. Everybody at my school was into Dave Matthews or Hootie  , which was popular at the time. No offense to those fans.
