The Generic vs. Brand Name thread got me thinking. What brand and type of condoms do you use?
I'm a Trojan gal, usually prefer Spermicidal Lubricant ones. The heated gel ones burned, so those have been thrown away.

none!
and when i was using them, i never bought. so i don't really know. i think my current used lifestyles. i remember him saying they were the ultra-thin kind.
my ex used to have to get the trojan magnums. hahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaa! took a few broken ones to figure that out.

I get horrible urinary tract infections...so lately we've been purchasing the non-latex kind. They are some synthetic material. Husband says that he can feel heat better  . They are trojan.
edit: But I prefer nothing!!!! :p

I stick to the pill. All "accidents" that I've been around in my life, including my best friend (her baby is cute too) were people using condoms..and condoms only. Had another friend freaking out cause their condom broke, and a piece came out 2 days later when she was peeing. She freaked out about possibly being pregnant too. Yikes! She's not however, to her relief :)

Trojan light blue ones, hehe. I used to be on the pill, but stopped it because I am convinced it contributed to the growth of my monster fibroid (the one I'm having surgically removed in 3 weeks , cry:) so now I use a diaphragm, instead. My mom has used one her whole life and said it has never given her any problems.
It was funny, though: the first time the long-distance dude I am kinda-sorta seeing and I had sex, it had been ages since either of us had "gotten any", so he had to fumble through his closet for condoms:
"Uhhhh I've got a glow-in-the-dark 'Dude, Where's My Car?' condom. Do you think that would work?!?"
Yeah, I wasn't even gonna ask. ;)

Don't forget, if you ever have an 'accident' with a condom (breaks, slips off), skip a few pills, or just don't use anything, you can always use :razz:Emergency Contraception:razz:, also knows as the morning-after pill. It's a dose of hormones, similar to birth control pills, that can be taken AFTER unprotected sex. The sooner you take them, the more effective they are, but you are able to take them up to five days after sex (some places say three days, but Planned Parenthood has approved it's use for five days after). EC either prevents you from ovulating, prevents the sperm and egg from meeting, or prevents the egg from attaching to the uterus.
EC is not the abortion pill. If you are already pregnant, it won't harm the embryo; EC helps *prevent* pregnancy.
I keep a pack of EC at home, just in case, so if I need it, I can take it ASAP (but I've been lucky so far). If you live near a Planned Parenthood, you can probably get a prescription there, or from your regular PCP or GYN.
http://www.plannedparenthood.org/ec/ has more info.

Okay...question on the EC...if you HAVE missed pills, and you HAVE ovulated, then it's not gonna do any good? 'Cause the egg's already out there, right?

I've never used condoms because I've never had sex, but one time my crazy roommates in college decide to have a porn night. So they rent some crazy porno called "The Osporns" (parody of the Osbournes) and they get all these flavored condoms and we taste them all (eww).

Emergency Contraception
Now that's a dangerous topic. I've seen in the news where Pharmacists will turn away people with prescriptions because they believe in Right to Life.
EC is supposed to work in any case. Even if you skipped a pill or weren't on the pill to begin with. That's why people fight it. They think that EC is causing a fertilized egg to die, cause it can't attach to the uterus, or whatever it does, and they think that's killing off the baby. I'm not starting a pro-choice or pro-life post here, just stating what I know of EC.
On a same but different point, I think that BC pills should be over the counter. Drives me nuts being forced to go to the doctor for those. (I know, I know, it's better to see the doc) but if I lose a pack or have to start over, or wanted to skip a period...it's a hoopla getting additional pills. Not to mention long lines at the pharmacy.

10-06-2004, 11:33 AM
I actually wouldn't even bother to go to a pharmacist for EC, if I were getting it, I'd go to Planned Parenthood. I'm a big fan of PP. I'd never go anywhere else for my OB/Gyn stuff.

You must be MUCH more conscientious about not being late taking a pill than I am. The last thing I want to be thinking about in the moment is, "Waaaait, did I take Tuesday's pill when I was supposed to? Shit!"
Bigboom...a guy I dated for a little while had a kindergartener as the result of his GF telling him she was on the pill when she wasn't. But do you brush your teeth at the same time? What if you go out? See, this is why I can't take mine at the same time every day. Usually I take it right before I leave the house at 7/715, but on weekends? Hell no. And I sleep through my alarm most of the time, so that's out of the question. Im good about taking the pill at the same time each day. I keep it next to my alarm and so it goes off....gets turned off then I grab my pill and take it.
On the weekends its the same..I just set my alarm...take the pill and then go right back to sleep.
As for STD testing....I wont sleep with someone until he has been tested. If he starts talking about us doing stuff, I tell him that I wont until I know he is clean. Ive even gone with him to then have us both get tested (if he requests)----once we get results...then we are game.
When Im with someone and only them for a long period then its just the pill...
Otherwise its durex and the pill.

Well, I usually brush my teeth right before bed. (Which is usually around 11:30 on the week nights). I guess that I sometimes take it a little after 11:30 on the weekends, but I think that an hour off here or there isn't going to make a big difference. (At least that is what my doctor told me)
I used to take it in the morning, but that made it a lot of more challenging to be consistent. Some morning it would be noon before it occured to me that I hadn't taken it yet.

Okay...I wanted Chris to get tested b/c he'd had other partners...but then he got into the accident (we had sex twice right before w/ condoms). I know they don't test you for STD/HIV when you're in the hospital but 1) he was on a lot of antibiotics that would have cleared up any STDs, 2) he has a RAPID healing rate, which he wouldn't have if he was harboring anything, and 3) I saw his nether region almost every day, so I would have been able to see any warts/sores.
Do you think he should still be tested? He had been abstinent for a year before we met. I'm more worried about anything he could have gotten in the hospital from blood transfusions at this point. Part of me thinks I'm okay, part of me thinks I'm absolutely crazy.

See, due to work, I'm always getting up at different times, getting in/going to bed at different times. I try to take it at noon every day, because that's when I try to go on my lunch break, but sometimes I'm doing and interview, and it doesn't work out.
I'm not really a good candidate for oral contraception due to my weird hours, but the NP at Planned Parenthood was retiscent to recommend the shot or implants, and the patch and Nuvaring are too new and untested for me to e comf with them. So, pills and condoms it is.
Not that any of this matters in my life in its current state. Although I do use birth control for reasons other than contraception.

Jen, I took 'em before I was sexually active, because I'm severely anemic, and they regulate my (formerly week-long, heavy) periods so I don't lose as much blood. Also to tame debilitating cramps. Works like a charm. Still...
...Does anyone else get nervous about the effect of pills on your health? My younger sister, recently had an adenoma discovered on her liver that was attributed to the hormone influx from her pill, and has had to go off, so I've gotten kind of sketchy-feeling about putting extra hormones into my body since that happened. It would have never been known that she had the tumor, either, except that it was discovered by accident during surgery to have her gallbladder removed. There were no symptoms. It freaks me out.
In response to Jen, yes, Chris should get tested. There are certain STDs that can't be treated by antibiotics that also don't have outward symptoms, necessarily (herpes and genital warts/HPV, which can lie dormant, but still be transmitted).

Definately. Plus, even if you've been safe and made good choices on who to sleep with, you start getting paranoid that you caught something at some point in time. Getting tested is easy and you feel much better afterwards. My last Dr. Visit, even tho I was with my man for 1.5 years and tested b4hand, she got all mad we weren't using condoms and asked to STD test me, and I thought, what the hell, go for it. Still clean. Plus my insurance paid for the lab fees as part of my yearly checkup. So that was kewl.

My PP is open on Saturdays, Jen, but requires an appointment. During the week, it's drop-in, but Saturdays they get busier, so you need to schedule an appt. They also tend to do a full consultation, if it's your first visit with them, if memory serves. Give 'em a call. You might also have to do a pee test, so it's good to know that. I have a shy bladder, and didn't know I was gonna have to do that, so I was there a million years until I could pee, the first time I went.

Call me crazy/paranoid/etc. but does anyone else find it a little scary that most people just trust the BC? There are a lot of people who don't stay committed to their relationships (one of my friends had it happen to him (GF cheated) and even though they used condoms, he still got tested to be safe). Why not use condoms, as well?
tartytwenty
10-07-2004, 12:47 AM
Why is it crazy for someone to trust who they are with? If I go through life assuming every guy is cheating on me, and force him (any myself) to use condoms...that just sucks.
I think the best you can realistically ask for is to find a loving trusting partner, get tested (we both have) and go from there. If cheating is involved, that is the worse for many reason. Trust is broken, the scare of STD's is there...etc. But on the other hand, if I were to worry constantly my man is cheating on me...then there's obviously other issues as well. If I were to suspect even at .001% of cheating, I'd use condoms and pill again, but most likely, I wouldn't be sleeping with him at all, until I figured out what was going on.

So even married people are supposed to use condoms every time? I don't think that is very realistic. I live with my boyfriend. We're together 24/7. I have no reason in the world do suspect that he is unfaithful to me.
kitalyn414

from planned parenthood:
"Of 100 women whose partners use condoms, about 15 will become pregnant during the first year of typical use.* Only two women will become pregnant with perfect use.** More protection against pregnancy is possible if condoms are used with a spermicide foam, cream, jelly, suppository, or film."
vs.
"The Pill is one of the most effective reversible methods of birth control. Of 100 women who use the Pill, only eight will become pregnant during the first year of typical use.* Fewer than one out of 100 women will become pregnant with perfect use.**"
so - there is no reason to be paranoid about pregnancy if you are only using the pill & are using it correctly.
as far as cheating goes - i trust my partner. what else can you say? that is part of being in a relationship. i agree with tarty, if i am suspicious of a partner cheating, then there is something fundamentally wrong with the relationship. if i had any inkling that he was unfaithful, it would be over. (i've been cheated on before, so i now trust my instincts).

I agree kita, but with so many women aren't 100% perfect in their pill use, if it makes them feel better to be safe than sorry, what's wrong with that? I don't feel paranoid if I double up, I feel at ease.

There is nothing wrong with that. To each their own. I just don't think it is "scary" that some people are choosing to use the pill alone.

I would get paranoid if BC and a condom weren't used, but I actually have a reason for this. A good friend of mine, who had been dating her boyfriend for about three years and thus deemed condoms unnecessary, was having sex while just taking BC. Well, last year she got pregnant with twins. Freaked her out, she's very consistent with the pill, hadn't missed one, and bam, congratulations it's twins!
It may be only 1 in 100 who get pregnant while on BC, but that 1% chance is enough to scare me into using both BC and condoms now!

Well, there is no right or wrong choice for the most part. Condoms aren't 100%, Pills aren't 100%
Abstinence is. That's the best method! ;)

1 in 4 people have been exposed to HPV. Not to say they actually have it but they've at least been exposed and that's scary enough!

Found this online:
Are 80% of adults really infected?
According to the American Journal of Medicine in 1997, 74% of sexually active people (aged 15-49) will get an HPV infection at some point in their lives. I have also heard 80% from other sources, and this could well be true because STD infection rises as time goes on. It is made up of three different kinds of people: 1. People who currently have warts or dysplasia, 2. People who have, at some point in their lives, had warts or dysplasia, and 3. People who are carriers of the virus but don't know it because they never had any symptoms. Together, they make up 80% of people having sex today. This means a lot of your friends are infected, too. Scary, isn't it?
This whole thread almost makes me want to never have sex again. It's just too much to worry about!

Well, HPV wouldn't be the end of the world.
Actually I know someone who just was diagnosed with this and had to have surgery to remove the lesions that formed on her cervix. It was changing so quickly that if the surgery had been even one week later it would've become cervical cancer. So in my mind it can be the end of the world.

Just cause I don't know what they look like- I just looked up pictures of HPV online:
http://www.condysil.com/std_pictures.html
Looks quite painful!
I had a friend who had them and she got pregnant and the DR told her that if she had some flare up when she was going to give birth they would have to do a C-section because I guess they can be passed on to the baby with serious complications.
edit: oh come on...you know you want to look.;)

I knew you could pass genital herpes to the baby if you had an outbreak when you delivered, but I didn't know that about HPV. I also know someone who got HPV and needed surgery. She was using condoms, too. Scary.
Hmm, makes me wonder if I should get tested JUST to be on the safe side?

I was just going to post that HPV GREATLY increases your risk of cervical cancer, but somebody beat me to it. SCARY.

Yes, and did you know that by having oral sex with someone with a cold sore, you can wind up with genital herpes? Or if someone touches a cold sore, and then touches your genitals? AAAAGH.

Yes, and did you know that by having oral sex with someone with a cold sore, you can wind up with genital herpes? Or if someone touches a cold sore, and then touches your genitals?
But I also want to add that just because you have oral herpes doesn't mean you got them sexually! I've gotten cold sores since I was very young and the doctors assume I was born without the proper immunity to the virus, since there is no family history.
I used to freak out when they would give me herpes meds. I was convinced people would think I was 11 and having sex!!

So Paige, if you had a sore and gave someone oral sex, they could get the genital type, right? Just curious...

It is possible, but from what I've heard/seen, it is extremely rare. Normally I can feel a cold sore coming on before it actually appears(for lack of a better explanation:a spot on my lip starts feeling twitchy) so I usually have a 24 hour head start on medicating it.
