Question for you all: What would you think if the losing candidate (Presidential election) was given a position in the winner's administration? The reason I ask is because the country was split almost evenly on who they wanted. I've seen this happen on the local level--my town has a first selectman. His running mate is the second selectman and the loser is the third selectman, giving the minority party a voice.

That would be politically unwise for both men. Senator is a far better job. The President doesn't need his opponent undermining him at the same time he is still his party leader. Clinton won far less than 50% and didn't do that either. Not a chance.

I didn't mean Bush and Kerry, specifically, CK ;)
But...Kerry is from Massachusetts...does he really have all of the American people in mind? Yes, he's supposed to, but you know that everyone's pulling for more pork.
Unless he's changed, now that he's really toured the country and met all kinds of people...

Look for John Breaux of Louisiana to possibly become Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Who do you think will become Attorney General? They mentioned Giuliani as possible, but he of course says he's not interested in the job.

John Danforth of Missouri, Marc Racicot (current RNC Chair), or the guy who was Ashcroft's deputy and is now general counsel of Pepsico (I can't remember his name!!! He's African-American, just as an FYI).

Defense - Rumsfeld will stay.
State - Look for Condi Rice to move up or possibly James Baker to return
Treasury - John Snow will remain.
Look for substantial changes at the marginal cabinet posts.

Back when I was younger and didn't understand politics very well I always thought that the losing candidate should be the Vice-President. Like that would ever happen.

I also think the losing candidate should not be considered for vice president. Can u imagine the dysfunction? It'd be like an unfunny Married with Children. Last thing we need is polarization within the oval office.

I never said it had to be VP. Just some higher office.
It was just an idea...

Am I right or wrong, but the losing candidate (or 2nd most voted for) back in the day (way back in the day--George Washington), did get the seat of Vice-President...??

For a position on the cabinet.....I forget which position he said since I did not hear the whole thing. But McCain seems to think Bush should include a high profile Democrat in the interest of uniting the country more.....

I <3 Joe Lieberman!!! Yes, he's a good choice...but not for a higher up cabinet position...he's a moderate, which Bush should like.
And what about McCain? He should be in the cabinet too.

Yeah...except the Dems wholly rejected Lieberman as too conservative for them in the primaries....Bush could appoint Lieberman and the left would still be crying about it...

Well then...those criers can shut the fuck up and realize that another Dem on the cabinet is GOOD. I really like Joe and NOT just b/c he's from CT. I am a moderate too.

Oh I know! I hate that! There needs to be some structural changes w/in the party if they want unity.
You cannot get anywhere with extremists and more "normal" Dems. I don't know HOW the Reps. do it w/ born agains and just normal conservative folk.
