...hate to say i told you so re: politics forum  I brought it back to much demand, with much hesitation. personally, i'm happy to get rid of it now that the election is over - i never wanted the forum in the first place, it doesn't support the qlc mission - if anything it creates a hostile environment. so, is this the general consensus? no turning back this time? no one will miss the politics forum again?

I'm wondering if we should put a poll up on it. Some people have expressed their feedback on the other thread but I have a feeling there are some that aren't willing to post their opinion vocally.

Fine!

Get rid of it!

Can we replace it with something else? Don't ask me what though.....maybe a General B.S. category?

I stand by my belief that the topics will continue to come up, whether there is a place for them or not. Obviously, it's stuff people wanna talk about. I could be wrong, though. A poll might not be a bad idea.

I'm with Wordsmith. I find the thread a place to post your views and everyone has a say, and it can get harsh in there, however everyone has done a good job of keeping the arguments out of the other threads. At least that's what I notice.

Well, I'll say this (and this is as a reg. member, not as a mod)...it's only when people act completely stupid does fighting begin. Act smart and there won't be problems.

Easier said than done for some people, Jen.

NOOOOO KIDDING. Some of the posts here seriously make me cringe.

Same here. That's why I want the forum gone. It's sad watching a bunch of 20 somethings (some, not all) that can't act like civilized adults on a message board where they're resorting to name calling.

It's not just the politics thread though. It's all over.

I agree. People who post stupid sh*t meant to cause problems tend to post stupid sh*t meant to cause problems across the board.

If you guys see someone who causes problems on the boards, let WB or me know about it and we'll take care of them. This is your board--speak up.

Here's the thing, though, Jen, though I get what you are saying. If somebody posts something I think it thoughtless and personally offends me, I'm not likely to report their post unless it's blatant and out of control. Why? Because it might just be something that offended me. I'd rather just address it with the person. It's not like they are offending the masses. And the bulk of stuff that causes emotions to flare on here is stuff like that. I really think it's just kind of the nature of the medium.

We're not talking about posts that are "thoughtless" or even posts that are "personally offensive." We're talking about posts in which the poster clearly intended to A) attack another poster; or; B) articulate in such a manner as to make it obvious to the reasonable observer that the poster's intent was to stir things up and be ugly.

Exactly. Thanks WB. That's what I meant. Report the really bad posts.

wordsmith

Right, I get that, of course. I know what posts are worth reporting. But I think it's the posts that AREN'T quite worth reporting that cause stuff to snowball into a flurry of high emotions lots of times.

I sense that some of the bickering and contention that some posters are distressed by is more along the lines of stuff that springs out of personally, individually hurt feelings, not something that could necessarily be prevented by moderation, unless you guys want to be the hurt feelings police, which I don't think you would or should do.

WeirdBrake

We don't have to be the hurt feelings police, but it's not a problem for us to intervene with a friendly reminder post when threads seem to be getting too personal for their own good.

Yeah, no...everyone needs to learn to play nicely. But I will say that reading some of the comments on here are taxing in the fact of trying to decipher whether or not they are meant to attack. And some posts are completely idiotic...but there are personality clashes everywhere. There are some people on here I don't like, same w/ WB. But I'm sure there are people who don't like WB or me, and as long as they don't personally attack us (or others), they can stay. But sometimes it's really hard to just swallow the lump that's forming in my throat due to some asinine post, and keep going.

wordsmith

Right. But don't you think these are some of the clashes that are distressing people? I guess I just don't see any way around the fact that with this many members, people aren't always going to get along. Hopefully, they can always be handled as civilly as possible...but it's not always gonna be smooth. I know you guys know that. I'm just saying.

Yeah, no one can get along w/ everyone and if we banned/warned every person that someone complained about, we'd have NO board left. So lets just chill.
