Well, last week I was all excited because Bridget Jones -The Edge of Reason was being released a week early - then to my disappointment I realized it was only in 500 theatres and the boondocks of Oregon were not included (shocking). But I am so excited to see it tomorrow - has anyone seen it already? I heard it was better than the first one.

It's only playing in 2 theaters around here. But I saw it anyways and loved it!

I saw it and loved it! Did you read the book? I found that the only people who were disappointed or giving it a bad review were people who didn't read the book...

Yeah, Met...I noticed that. I saw it w/ Coll and she liked the first one better--but she hasn't read either of the books!
I loved the books, loved the movies! :)
BTW, if you are wondering where Coll is...she's moving in to her NEW CONDO!!!!

The same thing happened to me, Irish. Shockingly, rural Illinois does not possess "select theaters." I'll be seeing it tomorrow.
I loved both books, and actually liked the second one a bit more, so I have high hopes. I concur that people who found the book charming found the movie charming, from what I've read.

Allison really wants to see this movie, but unfortunately, bigboom can't exactly fly here all the way from Canada just to take her to see a movie. So she'll either have to go by herself or wait until it comes out on video.

I didn't read either of the books, I should really do that. I did think some of the things were a little over the top, but so much of that movie just stuck home and was so funny.
For those of you that read the book - wasn't Colin Firth supposed to be in it? Not Colin Firth playing Mark Darcy, but the actual Colin Firth?

I saw Renee Zellweger on Letterman last night. Now, normally I think she is absolutely dropdead gorgeous. Top 3 probably. But she changed her hair to this really dark brown -- almost black color for a movie and it looked awful on her. Maybe it's just because I've got that whole Jerry Maguire image of her being blonde burned into my head. :D

I actually liked the 1st one better.

I really liked her new hair color...I don't think everyone can pull off the blond to dark brown look, but I think she can.

She's pictured with dark hair on the cover of the current Glamour. I think she looks good. Excessively thin, but good.

I'll see my sister tomorrow night when she comes home from college, so I may beg her to go see it with me. Her company is a downer sometimes (she's DEFINITELY full of piss and vinegar!) but at least if we go to a movie she'll be forced to keep quiet.

Yeah she's always been a bit on the thin side.

I think she looks great as a brunette - it makes her eyes stand out. I'm going with my sister to see the movie after work today - haven't read the second book, but I did read the first and like the first movie better than the book.

Everything I've read thus far says ridiculously constructed, contrived, silly plot, offset by wonderful acting and characters. I've read the book, so I know this to be true of the story in that form as well. The point, for me, is the characters and acting. So I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it. I know what I'm getting into.
Plus, although it's gotten mixed reviews, Roger Ebert liked it, which is usually my best litmus test.

I loved it! I haven't even read the second book. I found that reading the book spoils the movie for me. I've read the first book (after watching the first movie) and I loved that too.
I recommend it! If you don't take it too seriously it's really funny and sweet!

Yes, some of the part of the story were a little extreme to believe and the amount of the bad stuff that happened to her was over the top (like the commercial where she gets drenched). I thought it definitely took it a step further than they did in the first one. But the characters and basic story are great, and so much of it hits home about being single or making dumb mistakes in a relationship.

I think I'm seeing this with my sister Catherine tonight. Maybe. She's not too enthused about the movie, because she never saw the first one and didn't get past page 3 of Bridget Jones's Diary. But she said she'd think about going with me anyway. NOW THAT'S LOVE!! ;) :D

I went to see it last night. I avoided the book since that usually makes the movie a letdown for me.
I liked it well enough, but wish I had waited for the DVD. It made me laugh a bit, but I thought it was a bit too over-the-top.
I think I will like it better when I can watch it at home, as the theater I saw it in was HORRIBLE. Smelly, uncomfortable seats, etc. I'd never been there before and will not be going back. The snack bar should be something you have to resist. I went in intending to get popcorn, but the fact that the entire theater smelled like a dirty public bathroom made me lose my appetite and become afraid to put anything from the place in my mouth.

Loved it!
Okay. BUT...the movie is not GREAT as a whole. It's only okay. The plot (if you've read the book, you know), is kinda crazy and has some contrived bits, which make her seem less everywoman than the character was originally intended. And I was left saying "Huh," at some of the ways they constructed stuff in the adaptation, stuff they left out in favor of other stuff, characters and moments that might have been cleverer. They did completely change some things, some of which worked (the expanding on the Daniel Cleaver role was warranted, I thought...since Hugh does so well with the character, they'd have been nuts to relegate him to just a scene or two), some of which didn't (not buying the Rebecca bit, going with how it was in the book would have been better, IMO).

Helen Fielding wrote the first book to be a P & P-ish update...Loose at best, but general themes parallel...Bridget and HER Mr. Darcy's first interaction occurs at a party where he's stupidly rude to her, but it mainly springs out of his shyness and uncomfortability, etc.
The reason that Colin Firth fits the role of Mark Darcy so well is because Fielding wrote the character in the books with him in mind. She's a huge BBC Pride and Prejudice fan, and the character was inspired by Colin Firth from the very beginning.
I know way too much about this for somebody who doesn't typically like chick lit OR Jane Austen. But I do love Bridget Jones.

I finally saw the movie and have to say I was a bit disappointed. There were parts that were hilarious (getting dressed with the sheets draped over her and skiing) but the story was a bit out there and made the characters a little harder to relate to I think. Altogether it was good, just not as good as I was hoping - I'll have to read the book now to see how it compares. :)
