My lease is about to expire and I'm 6 months out of graduation working at a place where other college grad's ended up at and got too comfortable to leave. I can see that that is not how I want to be in 20 years, but where to first? I need help! Anyone in the Chicago area? Let me know of good neighborhoods - I have had several interiviews and now am coming upon decision making time. I feel I'm at the mercy of scummy realators.
If this doesn't work I've considered moving back west - Portland or Tacoma. I miss the mountains.

Please anyone Help!

I don't know Chicago that well as I live by Milwaukee not there, but I can tell you if costs are a thing to you, I have heard it is VERY expensive to live in the Chicago area (my friend knows someone who is paying $1000 for a one bedroom place!) I know some people actually live in Wisconsin and take the train down, or do the commute. Otherwise, I think Milwaukee is a great place to live! I moved here 3 years a go for grad school and I REFUSE to move away! There is all kinds of life here /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Hope I was of some help!

I currently live in Chicago (and have since college), and I can tell you that it is super expensive. It is a fantastic city, but not unlike New York in cost. I pay $1100 for a one bedroom apartment, plus another $140 a month for parking.

My suggestion would be that if you're coming to the city that you look for a roommate. And be flexible.

In terms of locations, the most popular place to live is Lincoln Park, but also the most difficult to find a good deal. The Gold Coast and Streeterville are way too expensive. Try Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Bucktown, and Wicker Park. Even still, expect to pay about $800 for a small vintage (not charming vintage, OLD vintage) apartment.

Good luck!

I got laid off from my job in April, and things are not looking good in the area economy. As much as I love it here, I am thinking of leaving because I can't afford to live on unemployment much longer. It doesn't even pay my rent.

Anyway, if you have questions, feel free to email me. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

In response to anyone wondering about Chicago (I think there were two of you). It's a great city with lots of diversity and culture, however it is expensive...if you let it be. There are tons of free things to do and public transportation is easy and safe. Rent IS an issue. I am lucky enough to live in Wrigleyville with three other twentysomthings and I pay ONLY $475. If anyone is headed to the Windy City, I recommend you check out the Chicago Reader www.chireader.com (http://www.chireader.com) for reasonable apartments or take a road trip down here and walk the neighborhoods. Big move-in months are October and May. I will be down here a year this October and if anything has helped this quarterlife crisis I am having, it's been this city and its opportunities. It is not for everyone though so if anyone wants to chat, please e-mail me and we can chat "offline."
