I have never worked during this time of year, so I was wondering if anybody gives their boss a Christmas present?

The only knowledge I have on this subject is from Seinfeld. Where George gives his boss a receipt for a donation to a charity that doesn't exist.

I should note that I only see my real boss about once every two months. I have 4 or 5 other managers that I see about as often.

I personally make a homemade box of candy for each person in my office. According to legal, a subordinate should not give a supervisor a gift. There are exceptions to the rule. Plus a homemade box of candy takes time, but doesnt cost alot of money. And when it comes to gifts they do place monitary limits. So I am well within my monitary limits. So I would say that a box of candy (homemade or not) is a good choice for a boss. Also ask the others in your workplace what they have given the boss in the past.

Is there anyone there you can ask about the gift-giving climate of the workplace? I was used to never exchanging gifts at work and then a couple of years ago, both my bosses turned up with big, lovely gifts for me, and I felt terrible for having nothing for them. But ... these were people I worked with every day. It sounds like with your boss situation, it would be kind of surprising if they gave you a gift and certainly if they expected one from you.

I'm not getting anyone except mom, dad, sister, boyfriend, and boyfriend's family a gift this year. I simply can't afford to shop for everyone. What we are doing at work is having a team holiday outing to a restaurant. We will probably all split the bill but if I know my supervisor, he will probably try to pay. I am going to give everyone, including him, a nice card complimenting them on their hard work during the year. I am also going to try to bake cookies for everyone. It's hard for me because our staff is so small that it would be insulting if I bought for him and not everyone else. I did think though of having each co-worker contribute $5 or something so we could all split a gift for him. I have to talk to everyone about it.

You can never go wrong with food - bake cookies, or bread or some other sweet dessert. Shows effort, thoughtfullness and everyone loves free food!

a nice bottle of wine works too. i think there's even wine gift baskets that have cheese and crackers in them too. does your boss have a personaly secretary or asst you could ask? if not try asking someone thats worked there a long time.

For my co-workers, I bought a bunch of $5 Starbucks gift cards. I am only giving them to people who I am closer too. They understand that I am broke, as they make the same salary as me.

As for my boss directly above me, I got him a bottle of wine. You can't go wrong with alcohol.

But my bigger question is, there are 4 other VPs (besides my boss) should i get them something too?

Where I work, there are actually 4 supervisers for the customer service floor, but we are split into buying groups. Anyway the way our group does it is that we discuss what gift we want to purchase for our supervisor. Someone scouts it out, then we all pitch in on the cost.

I too am on a tight budget for gifts this year, but even if I could afford more gifts for co-workers and boss, there is no way in hell I would. Sorry, but when you are treated like you barely exist at work, I can't give.
