Curious as to where our numbers lie on this in light of recent threads. What are your thoughts on having a child or children? You don't have to put reasons or anything like that. I'm just curious about the spread.

I'm the undecided but leaning towards yes. I can't picture physically having my own child, but seriously am considering adoption.

Why would you want to adopt if you could have your own?

Some people would rather take care of the kids that are already here and need homes instead of creating more kids. Some people don't want to pass on genetic problems.
I voted "undecided but leaning towards yes."

Which is why I want to adopt. I'd really want to adopt older boys(6 & up) those are the kids that no one wants, cause everybody wants little babies or girls.

The only way I feel I could do that is if I was able to stay at home, because often times kids that are adopted older have other issues that need a lot of attention. I don't think I could help out a kid who just got a home if I was in the office all day.

That's why I'm undecided. My mom quit working for 13 years to raise my brother and I(went back to work when bro was 11 & I was 13). I would want to do that if I had kids, which is why having kids is something I see happening in the far future if at all. I really think the fact that my parents were older (31 & 27) when they had me, I just naturally feel the need to be older when I have my kids.

well. Its no surprise. Everybody knows that I have one of my own. Some ppl know that my sister lives with me with her two sons, so I feel like i have 3 kids. somedays I would like to have more children and somedays I think i'm crazy for letting the thought even cross my mind

Paiger- are you sure about that? I want to have my own children, and would love them no matter what, but sort of hope for all boys... I just don't see how they're not a million times easier. I am a girl myself. :)
tina- I know what you mean about wanting more children. even though I was pretty certain when I met my bf's 5 year old daughter, my experiences with her have just confirmed it to the factor of a million.

I voted undecided but leaning towards yes. I'm pretty sure that if I get married, then I will have kids. If I don't get married, I don't think I'll have kids.

Yes, when it comes to adoptions older boys do not get adopted at the same rates as infants or females. I think it sucks big time!

that is so sad!!! and I really thought it would be the opposite - ever been, or share a bathroom with, a teenage girl???

i voted that i definitely want them. i would like to pass on my genetic superiority. jk
i have always loved kids & i'm pretty good with them. i was a nanny the last 2 years & joked that it was the best form of birth control. i'd have to say my new job, in which i get to see abortions, is a better form of birth control. Maybe all middle schoolers should check out an abortion. that'd keep their legs closed & pants on more than carrying around an egg for a week.

Speaking of that...I saw a girl walking to school this morning carrying one of those fake babies that cries. LOL
The best form of birth control for me? Having an aunt who had 3 kids in just over 2 yrs (first one born when I was 15) and spending a LOT of time watching them.

Undecided but leaning toward no......the last thing I ever want to do is be a stay-at-home mom, and I'm afraid my career would get in the way of raising children properly. Plus, I'm afraid I'm just too selfish to be a good mom. I have siblings, though, so maybe I'll get to be fun Aunt Allison someday. I'd be the kind of aunt who gives the kids junk food and buys them expensive toys/clothes.

Lyra, wow...can you imagine the recoil from THAT field trip suggestion???
My sister always says that what made the biggest impression on her was no the egg babies in 8th grade, but the classmate/childhood friend a year later who they all had to go to a baby shower for. A freshman in high school having a baby shower is something that stayed with her.

leaning toward yes...but I'm with skyblade on this, if I'm married some day then probably, otherwise nope... can't imagine doing the kid thing on one income...hell, can't even afford myself these days

The sad thing is that going to a baby shower at 14 or 15 might make some girls want to get pregnant more. They might think "oh, this looks fun. Maybe I'll have a baby too. That way we can play dolls together."

Like Ellen said, I want to have a baby, but I don't want to "have" a baby. I mean, I want to have a washer and dryer, too, but I don't want to go through all that to get them.
I'd give birth to one or two kids, and adopt one or two. I'm thinking about adopting a baby girl from a country like China or Qumar when I grow up, because they aren't valued as much as boy babies. I would love to find homes for all the unwanted children around the world, but I'm only one person, and I have a day job.

If I were to adopt I would definitely want a girl from China. I traveled in China over the summer and it was devastating to see orphanages filled to the brim with baby girls.

i know i have posted this before but i can't wait to physically have kids - to give birth. i want to be a midwife & i am fascinated by birth & women's bodies be able to birth a human being. it is just amazing. i imagine myself to be one of those happy pregnant women.

Really? To me it looks like giving birth to a child hurts REALLY BAD. not fun. not fun at all.

Undecided leaning to yes... but I just want one. And I want a boy. If I have more than one I still want the first to be a boy :) after that doesn't really matter.

it it painful, but i think, for a lot of women, it is the most amazing experience of their lives. endorphins help with the pain. pain is linked to fear. when a women is fearful of pain, the pain becomes even more untolerable & the more pain she experiences, the more she fears it. it were unbearable & women were not able to do it, do you think we'd be here today. i have seen a woman give birth at home, without meds or any of the medical interventions of the hospital. it was an unbelievable. childbirth shows women how strong they really are.

I have a 13 year old daughter at home and she's the best. Would I do it again? Not a chance in hell! I had my tubes tied (irreversible) as a gift to myself for my 25th birthday.

And I rest my case for adoption:D

Mad props to you. Unfortunately I don't think I could handle something like that. You are a less selfish person than I. I want my own kids. Not that having my own kids is unselfish since I would devote a lot of myself to them. But IMO it's more selfish than adopting (caring for someone else's biological child). This is all evolutionarily speaking (i.e. a child that is not biologically yours, you have no inherent push to care for that child since he/she would not be passing on your genes, but you still care for them - altruistic behavior). i'm a nerd.
Allison - I respect your views on why you don't want a kid. Even though I am working so hard to move on in my career, I would still want kids because IMO being a mom is the greatest pleasure a woman can have in this world and I wouldn't want to miss out.

Thanks. :) My mom stayed home with my sisters and me until I was 17 years old, and even then only went back to work part-time. (And she works with children; she teaches preschool). I really respect her for it now because I know there's no way I could ever do that.

Allison, even though we have diamatrically opposite wishes on this, have to go with Dazed in mad props to you... its not too many people who are EVER mature enough to figure out what you have.
I can totally see you as being "fun Aunt Allison..." :green:

They did that to you so young? My mom's GYN gave her a VERY HARD time when she was 30 and she wanted them done. They wanted her to wait until she was 35, but she fought them and got it done, hehe.

LOL--my sisters say the same thing! It will be a while, though. They're four and eight years younger than I am, respectively. I HOPE it's a while, anyway.

I had two super fun aunts growing up (my mom's older and younger sisters) who weren't married and used to take us for the weekend, send us kickass stuff, one lived in Boston and we would go up there and she'd take us around the city, it was super great fun. Then one got married when my brother and I were 15/13 and the other got married when we were 20/18, and there are younger kiddies now for my brother and I to have fun with. Allison, you'll do great!

I'd be especially good with little girls, I think, because I'm really still about 12 years old inside. :D
