dam, i've been missing out. seems like a cool place you got here.
I'm 24 years old. I live at home still. little by little all of my friends from high school are returning to town for a bit after graduating college.
Not me, i've been stuck in this stupid town making 10 an hour as a garbage man. everytime i try to get back into school, something happens to prevent it. mainly money.
With prices of apartments or houses, I cant even imagine how long it will be before im able to move out. And with the bills i have now, its going to take forever.
I feel like im at a dead end and it sucks.

You might still be in the same situation if you went to college. After you read a few posts, you will see there are a lot of college grads in situations similar to yours.... including myself. I have a BS degree and I am not making that much more than you. Believe me, between the cost of living and student loans... I need to move back home... but the price I pay for independence is living check to check with my debt rising more each year.

My co-worker makes $10 an hour, pays rent on a 2 bedroom apt($690/month) and supports her 3 year old daughter. She gets no support from the gov't and the dad left her high and dry 3 years ago. So yes, it's possible.

Paige, you coworker would call the courts and get his ass to pay for their daughter if she was smart. You can put me in touch with her and I'll be happy to get an experienced divorce lawyer to walk her thru the process, for free.
In all fairness, living in TX and rural PA is much different from living in Northern NJ, which is right outside NYC (tied with LA for most heinously expensive in the country, also something like 5th most heinously expensive city in the world) and the cost of living reflects that. It's not just in rent, it's in food, medical insurance, car insurance (sometimes even car payments!), commodities such as soap, TP, food at the grocery store, clothes, and gas, basically you get price gouged every which way.
If you had to pay $5 for a 4-pack of TP, $4 for a box of cereal, $4 for a gallon of milk, $7 for a frozen pizza (keep in mind these are the prices you pay in DC, which is much cheaper than northern NJ!) you would see why $10 an hour is a problem...
So please let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt.
Although, everett, I don't know that an iPod is a necessity...

im not the one with the IPod. it was someone else. LOL. i just got my paycheck today. i get paid every 2 weeks. its 608 dollars after taxes and all that jazz. so i make 1216 a month. thats rent alone in North Jersey. not including gas, electric, phone, etc. i mean im not complaining, or i dont think i am too much, but by the time i save enough money to finally move out, i'll be in my 30's. thats where my MLC comes in. no offense to anyone, but it just makes me feel like a loser that i cant make it on my own at 24. when my dad was 24, i was 2 years old and he was supporting me and my mom and paying for an appt. just dont get how he managed to do it.
life is sometimes confusing. i know im very young still and have only experienced a small portion of life but its been a hell of a roller coaster ride so far LOL

Everett, I know what you mean, my parents were the exact ages that my BF and I are now--but they were married and had me! And a house! I don't get it, but I guess things were cheaper back then and your dollar went further. My mom was able to stay home for years and my parents didnt have a mortgage and my dad worked for himself. It was sort of tight, but they did it. Most families have it tight where BOTH parents work! It's crazy and it bothers me to no end...

haha, pisces made me laugh.
I think the dollar went further because you didn't "need" all the technology that we "need" today, like cable TV, cell phones, etc. also college educations didn't cost a million dollars, so our parents didn't have massive loan debt!

No kidding, my dad went to UConn and my mom went to community college in RI. It was hella cheap. They had one car for the longest time too...

For whatever reason, I had always heard that garbage men make very good money. I wonder if that's just a myth.

Sounds to me like it's time to get the hell out of New Jersey. I'm renting a room in a 4-bedroom place for $325 (Canadian) a month (and I should have bartered him down another $25). Sure I'm living like a colledge student (which I am....), but I know plenty of people that continue to have these housing situations post graduation until they can afford a down payment or somthing.
....and I did just buy an iPod.

Haha, no. Although those RIM buildings tower like monoliths over this university. Too bad I'm not in Electrical, maybe some day I could have got a RIM job too.
I have turned into a palm-pilot whore though. I got mine for free when my brother upgraded.

I have no idea what you and J-girl are talking about, but does anyone else think those statements are funny? Juvenile, yes, but funny.

There's a few southern ontario double meanings here.
University of Waterloo = My School = Nerdiest place in Canada.
The two largest programs are computer science and computer engineering = gender ratio not in my favour at local gatherings = pub nights are sausage parties.
RIM = Research In Motion = The company that makes the Blackberry = Wireless technology company located right beside campus. RIM job = job working at Research in Motion.
Funny, YES! Now original... that's another story.

Hi Everett!
I'm 25 and I live with my daughter (shes 4) my best friend and my sister and her two sons (4 and 1) Its a tough world, sometimes and I know how money gets in the way of going to school. I would love to go back, but I never seem to have the money or the time to do it. I just keep trudging along and look for the opportunities that I am given. I still also hold onto the fact that I will eventually go back to school. It'll just take time, effort , and a lot of support from family and friends to get it done.
Hang in there! We are all here if you need us.

Hi there, I'm new to this site, but it looks really interesting. Is there a thread anywhere where everyone introduces themselves so I can get to know everyone a little or do I just jump right in?
Looking forward to meeting/talking to everyone here. :)

Here are a couple of the past threads where we have introduced ourselves. There are more, just search around. Every thread really has tidbits about everyone's personalities.
