First off this site WILL get me fired because I haven't done a damn thing all day at work today....
Second, I might have missed this but how large of an avatar can you upload?

For some reason, this site doesn't allow avatars, even though there is the choice in your options.

No avatars is really throwing me off since I'm a newbie and can't put name to "face". Are there no avatars on purpose, or is this due to a technical glitch?

As much as I love QLC, I wish there were avatars...most free boards do let you put in an avatar, but QLC, unfortunately, doesn't have the option.

Yes, avatars go a loooong way in adding a new dimension to forums and I wish this site had them, but I'm waiting for official word on whether this was done on purpose or by circumstance.

The only issue I can see with avatars is bandwidth, but limiting avatars to a specific size curbs that. So the only issue left is aesthetic, and I think people would overwhelmingly prefer avatars.

Pwease, pwease may we have avatars? ;)

edit: images aren't allowed in posts as well as banners, so this had to have been done on purpose. For the moderators out there, may I please ask why it's like this? I'm not criticizing, but merely curious. :huge:

I'm a moderator and I have no freaking idea about any of the board functions. Sorry dude.

:huge: Hehe... thanks for the reply. It's not important, but if mods don't have access to the board functions, who's the administrator? (I looked to no avail)

Avatars take up server space, and I'm not sure the owner of QLC, abby (one of the administrators), would mind buying more bandwidth, or space for avatars.

Its a large server, but I think that for the integrity of the site, no avatars enabled!

There was also talk, maybe a year ago (?), that if new options were to be added, we'd lose others. Adding more would require a membership fee to keep up with higher-tech options!

I've never known an avatar to add anything to a site. Its usually some random pic of like Homer Simpson or something goofy. I really dont see what you're losing by not having them.

I'm totally okay with not having avatars. I belong to other forums that have them (you can even put personal pics up), and honestly, this site is still the best, hands down. Even in my "old age" LOL.

Abby is the site administrator. The mods have access to board functions, I just don't think any of us know how that stuff works.

ABBY is the ONLY administrator. I thought your sorry self had been banned.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I have a clearer picture now.

Avatars take up server space...
Yes, but at 52kb each, that's negligible space. Oh well.

:huge: You're right, but I guess I'm a "visual learner" and like to associate those "goofy pictures" with the person behind the moniker, rather than just a name. They're like personal logos. They build brand value. ;)

In case anyone with access wants to enable it:
-go into the Admin Control Panel (link located at the bottom right of the page).
-in the left column under vBulletin Options, open that tab if it's not opened by clicking on the arrow.
-click "vBulletin Options"
-on the right column you'll see a list. Scroll down until you see "User Picture Options" Click on it.
-Set "Avatars Enabled" to yes.

To change avatar size:
-in Admin Control Panel, on the left column, open the "Usergroup" tab and click "Usergroup Manager"
-on the right column, select the user group you want to edit by clicking "Go"
-scroll down to "Picture Uploading Permissions"
-select "Yes" for "Can Upload Custom Avatars"
-for "Custom Avatar Maximum Width (pixels)" enter whatever, I suggest "150"
-for "Custom Avatar Maximum Height (pixels)" enter whatever, I suggest "80"
-for "Custom Avatar Maximum File Size (bytes)" enter whatever, I suggest "51200"
-repeat with until all user groups are changed.

Barring some unforeseen change of heart, or emergence of an actual reason to do so, we will NOT be adding avatars.

.

If you stick around long enough, perhaps you'll be one of the people lucky enough to meet some of us, so you will have a face to put with the name.

I am glad. I don't like 'em. they take up both visual and computer space. Some people choose ugly/gross/repulsive/stupid ones and the avatars are just repeated with every single post. Plus, it is alot more "literature-inspiring" to have a text-based forum :)

Avatars also make it REALLY obvious to the odd passerby that you're screwing around on your work computer. Even sites WITH avatars should have the option of turning them off.

*chuckle, chuckle* And that is what I'm doing right now, ain't it? I'm always afraid it's obvious anway, but nobody's said anything and I get my work done.

Yea I like boards without avatars. They are cool little things but they "bring down" the look of the site and make it look cluttered, and yea, sometimes people pick the dumbest pics for the avatars!

No, Super Mods do NOT have that kind of power, unless the administrator gives ACCESS to the full ACP.

A Super Mod is like a regular moderator, but with more options, such as editing your signature, sometimes your profile, and banning. And most of all, the Super Moderator can moderate ANY forum he wants, without having to assign the said SMod to all forums. That's why VB is popular, its too powerful.

IMO, avatars are great. no board should be without them.

it's so much harder to follow a conversation without them.

plus, the visual association adds more of a feeling of community.

this is the first board I've ever been to without them, it makes it very difficult to follow
