...Because the stupid IT department at work sent out an e-mail this afternoon that among other things we are not allowed to log in or post to forums. These people are security obsessed. My posting on QLC will not compromise HIPAA regulations! Ugh. Just another reason I am getting increasingly frustrated with my job.

Did they give specific reasons WHY you can't be on forums? What are they?

I still don't understand what the hell is the big deal about Internet use at work. I could understand bosses having issues with it if their employees were slacking off. But if you're getting your work done, why does it matter?

people will just find other ways to slack off or take a break.
sorry, carol. do you have internet at home?

Yeah, I have internet at home, but it's annoying to have something curtailed at work that imo is pretty harmless. Their only explanation was that things don't think are a big deal may be slowing down our computers. There's also a concern in general about security because we deal with personal data that regulated by HIPAA and some banking law. But like I said, posting on qlc isn't exactly going to open a doorway for people to start stealing social security numbers from us.

When my work said that they would start restricting certain websites at the start of the new year, my main concern was losing email and qlc access!
I really don't see the purpose of limiting internet access if you're doing your job. My work blocked stuff that had to do with porn, bad language or suspicious activity - I guess people were looking at some shady websites!

I'm not able to go online at work. I always come home after work and have to read on here what happened all day...

The big deal is that IT people are sick of being blamed for dopes who post things that reveal company/client information or allow leaks for hackers to get in. The first reaction to when an intranet site is attacked is "How come IT didn't prevent this", instead of "How come our idiot employees left the door open". This comes from a general ignorance of IT policies and procedures from upper management.
So, you get the revenge of the geeks.
I'm not saying that anyone here is dope for coming to this site on the company dime, just that there are a few bad apples in every company who would spoil it for everyone, so IT probably wanted to make a preemptive strike, so to speak. The internet is still technically a luxury (for most) and can be taken away if it is abused.
So be nice to us geeks and this won't happen! :p

As nice as people are to us geeks, it's not always us who make the decisions to block everything. I know full well that everything we do is traceable, and I still go on the boards. I've read in papers how people are getting fired over blogs, and posting bad things about their jobs/bosses on forums. It's the sad reality folks. Companies have to do this to protect their arses. We have a filter that filters out most of this stuff, but we get forums in case we need tech help from other techs. Otherwise I'd be blocked. Ditto goes with web mail for everyone, etc. The decision comes from the county board and the county administrator...not us geeks (in our case). However, we're the ones yelled at, but I sympathize. It truly does suck having to try and explain why certain sites are blocked and others aren't....oh well....
But as a geek, I do understand the need to blocking radio streaming....it's a network hog.

Luckily for me, being at a large university dealing w/ all sorts of websites and information, they'll never be able to block everything. there's too much that people need.
But that sucks carol :torn:... Maybe it'll just be a temporary thing? Kind of to curtail people for awhile...

But that sucks carol ... Maybe it'll just be a temporary thing? Kind of to curtail people for awhile... I don't know, they said they'd be monitoring more, but they might've just said that to scare people. We had a big virus attack one day and the IT people were running around trying to find the affected computers, but they had a lot of trouble figuring out which ID's matched up to which computer. So it may all be a bunch of BS to scare people. But it also kind of freaked me out that they specifically said no forums. I work at a relatively small company so it's not like there's hundreds and hundreds of people who would posting on forums. They also said no blogs (which i dont' have, so i don't care) but 2 people in my office didn't even know what they were, lol. Oh well, we'll see what happens.
