I am constantly wondering why Hollywood can't just leave the classics alone. They were great movies the first time around...classics. But then they have to go and do remakes of them. There are obviously countless examples of this. Here is the latest. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory remake...not episode 2 but a remake starring Johnny Depp. Come on Hollywood! Get some original ideas and stop recreating what was already done!!
Do you agree? Disagree?

While i think some old movies are ok to be remade, NOT this one!
It just looks plain creepy. And i bet families will go see it thinking its kid-friendly.

And Tim Burton is directing it...so you know just from that it will not be geared toward kids like the first one...and you know it will be dark and bizarre.

I think it looks great. If I were to pick someone to remake that movie, it would DEFINITELY be Tim Burton. And, Johnny Depp is a great choice. The original IS creepy... If Tim Burton uses ANY of the Marilyn Manson "Wondrous Boat Ride" track, that'll MAKE the movie for me.

I know..the original is so totally awesome it really should not be re-made. The new one will most likely suck. I think Tim Burton makes interesting looking movies..but thats about as far as it goes. The stories aren't that great.

For me there is usually a point in a Tim Burton movie where I have to ask "what kind of drugs is this guy on?" And also a point in most of his movies where I say to myself "and this is why I should not have rented this movie..."

I agree with Met. I can't wait to see this movie. I adore both Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Plus, Met's right - the original was creepy so of course the remake is going to be too.

I generally don't like my classics to be messed witha nd although I will probably see the remake, it will never replace the original with Gene Wilder for me. I also have a beef with the remakin of Superman, another childhood classic. I'm sure if I see that one, I'll pouting the whole way through. Christopher Reeve is the only Superman for me.

I would have to say that i see both sides of this. i think our generation needs its own identity. The way i see it now we are gonna be looked upon as the generation who ran out of ideas. We are the "remake generation" Plus Charlie and the Choclate factory is definately a classic. Gene Wilder IS Willie Wonka. However, I think if anyone can pull this off it is Johnny Depp. I can't wait to see it.

The "original" movie was Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory which was an adaptation of the BOOK titled Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. The "new" version is more from the book(hence keeping the Charlie & the Chocolate Factory title), which is a spooky Brothers Grim type of book so it seems fitting that Tim Burton would direct it.
So basically they will be 2 different types of movies, and who have the same characters. In actuality, the "new" version will actually be the truer version of what Roald Dahl wanted.

As far as I'm concerned Johnny Depp can do no wrong. All of his collaborations with Tim Burton have been great, so I look forward to seeing this - oh, and the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels!

I don't know. I don't have an issue with theatrical remakes...in fact, much like book to film adaptations, I dig going to them...you get blown away if it does a great job of honoring (or even supercedes) the original material, and if it's lame, it's fun to rip apart.
Coming from a theatre perspective, it's a lot like a Broadway revival show. It's not a matter of reworking a tired story, it's creating a new product with a different vision. One of the best things about live theatre is seeing various directors' and actors' takes on what's often familiar material. It's the same principle. IMO, the first person to get the chance to try their hand at bringing to life a given book, play, screenplay, etc. isn't necessarily the final authority on what it's about...the whole point of the creative process is, everybody has a vision. It's not a ripoff, or unoriginal. Look up academy award winning films, sometime, and you'd be surprised how many are remakes, where you didn't necessarily know there'd been an earlier version.
And if there's a better set of people to take on this particular book this time around than Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, I don't know who it would be. Depp's had this bubbling on his burner for years...it was just that the increased media attention from his Pirates of the Caribbean performance gave him some mainstream clout to get moving with it.

Good points Wordsmith...you have helped me see remakes in a new light. I still think nothing will top the original though!
And I still stand on my lack of creativity comment though...why not make Johnny and the Automobile Factory instead? Something different...original...refreshing...new...somethin g that does not attempt to rip off and capitolize on the fond memories of our youth (not really this movie but I think Dukes of Hazzard would be a good example of this)

But that is just it, it's based on the book, not the original movie. In essence it IS going to be different, refreshing and new!! In fact, I'm willing to bet a lot of people may be disturbed and expecting a happier film than what I think it's going to be.

Heheheh...the onetime theatre major takes a bow.
Try not to think of it so much as "topping" the original, as simply a different take.

I agree with words and will even take it a step further and say that originality (in regards to entertainment) is VASTLY overrated. Most of what is considered "new" is really just a variation on the old anyway.

I've seen the original dozens of times--we have the VHS at home. I'm sure it would pale in comparison to a remake--literally. The Gene Wilder version is so, well, colorful that watching it is like tripping on acid. Not that I would know, but still.

I agree. He would make a kick ass soundtrack to this movie. That would be so cool. Johnny Depp being hot aside, I'd go to hear the music.

As if the first movie wasn't disturbing enough....Burton directing and Manson on the soundtrack.
Still, it probably will be less painful than "From Juston to Kelly".

I've seen of the previews of that movie on tv, it's definitely not like the original movie. I use to have the video of the original movie & I liked it more geared to a musical. Tim Burton's version is definitely bizarre & dark. I read somewhere in a magazine he had seem the original version & didn't like it at all.

I agree with you. Look at Oceans 11. That was a remake right? I loved it. I can't wait for this movie to come out. I think its gonna be awesome. I think Johnny Depp is an incredibly versitle actor. I think he will definately do a great job pulling it off.
