View Full Version : I Hate The New Changed Forums

I used to love this sites' forums. I would post on them all the time and they were awesome. Now they've changed and I just hate them. I find the site to be visually cluttered.
It must change back, or I *will* stop using this site. I've tried to use it and I just can't. I can't read it, I can't enjoy it. It's loud, busy.
PLEASE BRING THE OLD FORMAT FOR THE FORUMS BACK.
This new format is absolutely hideously terrible and I cannot get used to it no matter how hard I try.

I actually have gotten used tot he new look and I like it a lot. Dit you know that if you click on a user name, it will not only tell you the last time they logged on, but exactly where they are on the boards if they're online. I thought that was cool.

I didn't like it in the beginning but I really love it now. I learned a trick so all the same threads don't keep coming up. After you've read all them, go back in your browser to the main page and click "mark all forums read". This is great cuz this used to irk me before I figured out what to do. I also love how we can put in attachments.

Cazort,
Wow, so much negativity. First of all, due to heavy traffic and security issues, the site had to be upgraded. So there's no going back. Sorry that the site layout bothers you so much that you're going to leave. That's really petty and immature. One would think that another could overlook the layout and enjoy the content.
Oh well.

I actually like the new layout better than the old one. It's more catchy.
However, this is still a free website, so it's not like we can complain...

Suck it up, change is a part of life. Just look what they keep doing to Lucky Charms....
By the way, it takes some guts to threaten people who provide a free, well maintained, easy to use forum for basically any topic that you would want to discuss, just because you don't think it's pretty. Why don't you develop a new layout and test it out, so that we can nit-pick it to death. By the way, you won't get paid a dime.
PS You think I should mention that you can change the layout in the User control panel? nah, I won't.

Hey, chill at calling me immature or whatever.
I have been trying to use this site for the past few weeks and I just can't get used to it. I don't know why but this new layout gives me a headache. It taxes my patience, it makes it hard to concentrate. I can't find the information I want and I feel distracted by all the high contrast. It's sort of extreme, I've seen plenty of forums in plenty of different formats.
I think the thing that I find most offensive is the extremely high contrast of red/white/black, whereas the other one was more consistent colour-schemed, and was less busy. Maybe there was more empty space? I'm not sure...I can't exactly put a finger on it. If I could see the old site side-by-side with this one I'm sure I'd be able to offer more constructive criticism.
It's not that I want to abandon this board, it's that my brain just cannot STAND to browse it for more than a minute or so before I just get absolutely fed up with it. I wish I could get used to it but I just can't. I'm just trying to share my feedback so that someone can use it to improve the site. It's not like I'm saying "change is bad"--heck, I like site redesigns when they make the site easier to use or read. It's just that I've been trying to get used to this for some time and I can't get used to it.
I'm sure there have got to be some others who feel this way too.

I think people didnt take too kindly to your post b/c it was a lil critical and not to mention, not very constructive. Even this latest post, while it does go into more detail about what you dont like, it really doesnt have any kind of suggestion on making it easier/better for you/everybody. What about those other forum formats did you like?

Thanks And1. My new co-moderator made some great points in the PP. We can't change the site. What's done has been done. But Cazort, the way that you came here and began your OP was almost like a tantrum. Sorry we can't please everyone, but the way you're handling it now is even worse than your OP. A lot of people found the site difficult at first, but we haven't been getting complaints lately. I'm sorry to be such a bitch, but really there's nothing we can do short of putting up and shutting up.

Respect for Others
Every person thinks, believes, and acts the way they do for reasons. You may not see or understand the reasons, but they are there, and you will indeed see them if you look hard enough.
There is no such thing as an invalid viewpoint or a wrong belief. Even if someone holds a viewpoint that you "know" to be "false", that viewpoint is valid because it reflects the events that led to the formation of that viewpoint.
It is senseless to hate someone for who they are, because the events that have built them have already taken place. Work with people as they are instead of wishing for them to magically change.
The above is something copied straight from cazort's website (which he has in his profile: http://www.cazort.net/personal/) under the heading "Alex's Outlook on Life." Seems like a very nice, tolerant philosophy.
you can go **** yourselves.
You all aren't even that smart or interesting anyway.
Seems also that cazort puts a generous distance between theory and practice.

Like I said, I find it really difficult to pinpoint what it is about the new site that bothers me, without having the other site side-by-side. Here is a site that has forums that I find visually more appealing:
http://forums.gentoo.org/
This site actually has a layout nearly identical to the OLD layout of QLC.
One thing I love about the gentoo forums is the way the "grid" in the messages is very subtle: there is a light-blue background, with white dividing lines. This is very easy on my eyes: my brain is able to easily determine where things line up, yet there isn't a huge contrast. The new QLC forums have a heavy contrast: light grey background, with solid black dividing lines. I think light grey dividing lines, or white dividing lines would make the site a lot easier to read.
The next thing is in the header above the list of messages. Look again at the gentoo forum. There is a dark purple stripe with white lettering--here heavy contrast is used--and this is for the headers describing what each column means: "Forum", "Topic", "Posts", etc. and "Topic", "Replies", "Author", "Views", etc. The important information in the header of the column is made immediately apparent by strong contrast of colours.
Now look at the new QLC forums. There is a HUGE red bar across the top that draws your mind's attention, yet it does not contain the header information. Instead, the header information is in very small type, underneath this bar, in a row that has the same coloration as the actual list of topics. Not only is there not a good contrast/emphasis on the header, but the header is made TINY, and then there is a second header that does not contain useful information that is made with heavy contrast that draws your attention.
---
Now, finally, look inside a thread. In the gentoo forums (which I think is more like the way QLC used to be) you can tell one post from another by the colour change in the background: each post alternates lighter and darker backgrounds, but the difference is subtle and easy on your eyes. With the new QLC forums, each post has an identical background, but there is a loud, solid red bar between each post that doesn't contain much useful information, yet draws your attention. Another difference between the gentoo forums and new QLC is that gentoo has the username, image, and post count and related information in a separate column on the left. QLC puts this in a separate row, above the message, under that loud red row (which draws your attention away from the useful row).
As a final "beef", the gentoo forum has simple icons/buttons in each user's post to allow viewing their profile, sending PM's, etc. The QLC site achieves this through popups. Not only is this less compatible but it's more complex: it takes more thought and more energy and it is less immediately apparent what to click.
There. VERY concrete recommendations. I may be bitching, but I think there are some very sound psychological considerations behind my bitching.

Cazort... here's a recommendation. Why don't you email Abby and ask her how much it would be worth it to her to change the QLC site format to your liking? Then, when she gives you the number, send her a check for that amount.
I'm actually being serious. Because right now, she doesn't have any incentive to change the format again, especially given that you seem to be the only one who has a problem with it. Maybe if you literally put your money where your mouth is, she'd change it for you.

also that gentoo site or whatever its called is about computers right? those people on that site and the creator are probably wizzes at that stuff. i think most of us are just happy we have a place to come to so that we can talk to other people. i've been on other sites that i think didnt had the best format, but i figured i wasnt going to bitch over something that was free.

Jen... might you be thinking of when he posted the following:
I went to a local chapter of the Jaycees after being invited by the vice president. It was one of the most disgusting things I have been to in a long time. The meeting was long, tedious, and filled with artificial structure. (Like, everything was motion to approve this, second, and it was a group of 10 people!). And then the treasurer made the most disgusting comment. They were discussing whether or not to give to this charity, and the treasurer said:
"I don't ever approve of giving to a group unless we get something back from them."
I'm like--WTF??? This is supposed to be a service organization? Your mission is to support the community.
And then...this man came with a plan to create a bipartisan discussion on the national debt and the medicare crisis, and the people in the group (after wasting two hours on meaningless nonsense) barely wanted to discuss it, and they were like: "Oh, this is too political." and "I don't want to participate in this because it might tarnish our name."
I got so incredibly angry that I stood up and was like--"Do you have any idea how you come across to prospective members like me? You sit around wasting time on trivial nonsense, and the one serious issue that will most affect all of us, you refuse to take a stand on it. You are a weak, pathetic organization."
And then they started yelling at me so I just yelled: "You are a bunch of fucking losers, I'm sorry I wasted my time coming to this meeting. I'm not coming back." and I stormed out.
It was so depressing...how can people be so despicable? I could just SEE that these would have been the same people who would have been fighting against desegregation during the civil rights movement, I could see the same discussion taking place. "It's too political.", "We don't want to tarnish our name."
Ugh...I hate losing my temper but sometimes I just can't handle the pressure. When people act like that it just pushes me to the edge and I feel nothing but rage...

And is it not rude to cry like a baby and say somebody's work is crap and that you hate it when they've invested their own time and money just so we can have a place to post???? Goddamn it, this mindset pisses me off to no end. People think technology is so easy that any idiot would know by now how to create the perfect site. Guess what, it isn't. Even by using a vBulletin template takes forever to create and I seriously doubt, in fact I'm sure you couldn't do have as good of a job. You'd probably start crying again and quit and just join this place under a new name.
Grow up and get lost. I hate your attitude because I deal with it every day from people who think a piece of technology is a right not a luxury, so that entitles them not to learn how to use it, because it's always easier to just chew someone else who's lower than you out and blame them.
By the way, if we're all so dull and dumb, how many more posts did you submit after saying this??

Excellent points, Morgan, and I totally agree. It's an obnoxious attitude, one that stinks of entitlement and laziness. Also, cazort should be reminded that Abby co-authored a best-selling book and has maintained this site for over 3 and a half years now; the boards currently have close to 4,000 members and over 100k posts. So maybe... just maybe... Abby is doing something right.

Um, I'm not going to tell you what that brings to my mind.
Anyway, cazort, grow up. I am sorry you don't like the new format, but your complaints sound extremely petty... it's a free website, and we should be thanking Abby, not bitching about a color scheme! Not to mention, it's been around so long I've gotten used to it, and kinda forget what the old one looked like.
I can't say that the Jaycees are for everybody (I've tried, and they're not really for me) but I think the fact that you have that attitude there, and here, probably means you have it other places. Maybe the Jaycees aren't the group for you, and maybe this isn't the group for you, but the common factor in your getting po'd and disgusted by people is YOU.
But really, getting hostile and telling us to F ourselves isn't going to make you any friends, especially when we're arguing over aesthetics. It makes you sound self-righteous, petty, whiny and immature.
