View Full Version : How much time do you spend working out?

I go to the gym about 5 times a week (sometimes 4, sometimes 6 depending on how busy/tired I am). I usually do a half hour of cardio and a half hour (twice a week) of weights per body type (so an hour each week for upper and an hour for lower). Then I do 45 min to 1 hour of cardio on Sat. and Sun. I'm shocked by how much time some people spend working out. I think even that is a lot! Some people do 2 hours of cardio without realizing they're actually doing themselves more harm than good....

I aim for at least 3 times a week.

I volunteer on Mondays, so I usually go Tues., Thurs, and one other day of the week, either Wed. or Sat. morning.

I go after work so it's a little hard to fit into the schedule. One time I tried going before work. I had to wake up so early and was SO tired throughout the day.

I'm pretty lazy and I hate working out. I'm scared to post how often I actually frequent the gym.

My goal is 5 days, whatever I can do, whether its a pilates DVD or outside for a walk/jog. 3 days is ok with me though, because I pretty much went from coming home after work and laying in bed all day to my 5 days a week goal.

I try to do SOME form of exercise on a daily basis. I've been finding it hard to get to the gym 5 days a week. 3 is more realistic for me. I usually do at least 45 minutes of cardio and a couple of the weight machines (usually leg/buttocks area). On days when I know I just am not gonna get to the gym I make sure I take a walk for 30 minutes-45 minutes. I heard that if you work out constantly you will top off at a certain weight and gain muscle too so a significant amount of weight loss won't be noticeable?? I think that my body is starting to change a lot as I get older anyways and I am just going to have to deal with being 5'5 and 130-135 at times ;) .

Yeah I've kind of evened out at about the same, winney. I am building up muscle though, which I'm enjoying.

I just can't get rid of my beer gut! It's my only complaint, and always has been. I've read it's "toxic fat" meaning sugars and bad fats, but I love my chocolate!

Um I don't work out anymore. I hate the gym. I wish I could find an exercise that I LIKE.

I've been doing my buns and thighs pilates dvd-it uses a band. The workout is 20 min! Those are the type of workouts i like ;) And then also trying to speed-walk or walk/jog around my apt complex

I think once I move into my parents I might start rollerblading around the neighborhood.

I usually work out 3-5 times a week and for about 30-45 minutes. On days I go walking around the trail here or in DC, that goes for about an hour.

Same here.

And i've slacked off in the gym dept. too, but am working back to that. So i usually spend about an hour there 3 times a week, and then some form of moderate exercise on the weekend like a long walk/hike...

I try to get to the gym 3-5 times a week (3 most recently...some times after long work days I just don't have the initiative to go!). If I don't go to the gym, I usually fit in some form of exercise: crunches and free weights at home, walking a couple miles along the Charles, or even just walking to and from the T stop and the office instead of taking the shuttle (amounts to about 2 miles). Weekends I am always outside hiking, biking, soccer...anything outdoors when the weather permits, so I guess that can count for exercise.

To address the original topic of the post: I spend about an hour at the gym when I go. 30 minutes cardio, 30 minutes weights. Or I do an hour-long class: Pilates or the Bootcamp weight class (sometimes I stay for the Pilates class after the Bootcamp class because the stretching is great after lifting all those weights).

I've got abs so solid you could hurt your knuckles punching them...but I also have an ass that makes Jello jealous. ;) Gotta love the trouble areas! I refuse to get rid of my chocolate too!

Too poor for the gym, but I walk daily for 30 minutes.

Walk at least 30 minutes a day (rarely at the gym, b/c mine is like crazy-super-snobby-talk-on-your-EFFING-cell-while-you're-working-out). I go to t'ai chi class three times a week (btwn 30 - 45 minutes) and those little Oriental people who do it together make it look deceptively easy - I've walked out of class numerous times slick with sweat. I try and get some additional physical activity in each day, even if it's dumb house work or washing my car.

I think my weight's about evened out, around 140, but I'd still like to lose 5 more lbs. If only I could really buckle down on not eating crap...!

I'm at the gym between 4-6 days a week. When I go to the gym, I usually do 20 minutes of cardio before lifting, lift for about 45 minutes (usually 3 exercises of each muscle group I'm working), and then do 20 more minutes (or more, but never more than anouther 30 minutes) of cardio.

That's my Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday gym schedule. On Tuesdays, I do that workout and then go to my 1 hr dance class. On Wednesdays, I just do 40-45 minutes of cardio and then go to my 1 hr Pilates class. I try to take Thursdays off... I've been doing low-key and just walking the dog and going to the driving range.

I could probably do more, but I try to keep my workouts at this level b/c this will be easier to maintain when I have a family... anything more that this is going to be really hard when (if) I have kids and stuff.

Yeah my gym membership expired March 31, and I didn't go back. Ugh I hate it. But I need to lose weight, so there you go...

I can lose weight w/out going to the gym - so, I usually take that rather unhealthy approach. I just hate hate hate working out. I can usually force myself to do it for about 4-6 months..and then I absolutely DIE.

I get bored of the gym sometimes. Maybe because I am self-concious too about using new machines I've never tried before. I so much rather would just take a long walk around my neighborhood. But then I go through weeks where I fiend for the gym.

Hehe the only times I've learned to use new machines (when a friend wasn't around to show me) is when I've been alone in the gym :) I never would have started running on the treadmill if it weren't for an empty gym with no people to get embarassed in front of!

Yep - I refuse to try something new when people are around, because it will be obvious when I can't figure it out and have to walk away after a minute :googly:

For years, I went to the gym about 5 days a week, but this last year and a half, I'm lucky if I do any exercise once a week. We just bought a used treadmill, and I thought that would help, but it hasn't. I don't feel like I have the time and energy when I get home from work ... though of course if I exercised I would have more energy ... and that's probably just a cop-out ...

I am actually considering canceling my membership..I just feel like maybe i'll start using it. I guess I feel somewhat healthier just knowing I belong to a gym. lol.

I used to work out in a gym. I quit going there because most guys come there to pick up women and won't leave you alone during your work outs hahaha. I work out 7 days a week, sometimes skip one day when I feel I'm really tired. I have been working out at home, weights, spinning, abs etc...and go for runs outside, also walk a lot and sometimes go swimming. Besides that, also eating healthy helped me loose 80 pounds...today a bit more

Oops I forgot how much time. It 7 days a week for about 3 to 4 hours a day...not in a row but spread all over the day.

i would say that i do some type of physical activity 6 days per week. i enjoy playing sports, and i go to the gym to try and make that easier......i'll usually take some time off (about a week) and the end of each season. in the summer i'll go for 100 kilometer bike rides (about 4 hours).

Wow a lot of you are much more frequent than I am. I like the gym. When I can get over the mental block of getting there. I always feel better but then it's like I have this internal war going on about actually going. I do better with exercising frequency when I just get off my butt and run around the neighborhood. No car rides. No fancy machines. Also no hot tub so boo on that one. The thing I hate the most is I have to get into at least 2 jogbras before these puppies are tied down enough. It's almost like dressing for battle.

I work out with wieghts 3 times a week for an hour of circuit training. I play sports and due a bunch of stuff with my friends for about another dozen hours. So about 12-18 hours a week.

This is an old thread, but I recently started going to the gym for the first time. The machines scare me. I think I looked like an idiot the last time I went because I couldn't figure it out at first, but I don't think people noticed...
I've played sports and took a pilates class, but never the gym.

I usually run 3.5 miles every other day and the days in between I fill in with doing dumbbells and crunches and pushups. Having things to do on Monday and Tuesday night (toastmasters and pottery class) and having my g/f down almost every weekend plays havoc with my schedule though. I like to exercise but I really detest gyms so maybe once I buy a house I'll get a home exercise machine and a treadmill for cold days or after dark.

I work out for about 40 minutes which includes stretching, then walking and running on the treadmill. I've been adding 5 minutes of running to my workouts every week for the past month, so this week I am running for about 20 minutes, then walking the rest. In a few weeks I start pre-training for my 5k training program! Yikes!

75-90 minutes three times a week. But this week I'll have to skip gym since I have to catch up on my reading

i try to go 3x per week, 45-60min sessions. trying to bump that up to 5x per week but i go during the day so it all depends on how busy i am at work. i run/walk on the treadmill for 30min and do yoga/stretching for another 15-30mins. i'm buying a house next month, and i definitely plan on buying a treadmill.

30-45 Minutes strength training at Curves, 3 times a week, then walk/run or elliptical for 45 minutes a day on non-Curves days.

ETA: Joined a tennis league & practice starts next week, so I'm probably gonna drop some of the running.

Wow, this is a serious *bump*...

Mine has changed, mostly b/c I can no longer afford a dance class. Boo... I do more cardio now, too. I do at least an hour 5-6 days a week, 20 minutes before lifting and the rest after.

MollyMe, don't be afraid of the machines. You're right -- no one is paying attention. Read the directions on the machine and go for it. If you're still confused ASK SOMEONE. Another member, a trainer... Don't hurt yourself lifting just b/c you were too embarassed to ask. You're more likely to stick with this new routine if you know what you're doing and you enjoy it -- and no one enjoys an injury.

I'm currently working out 6 times a week since I'm training for a century ride in June. Here's what my workout schedule looks like:

http://gallery.mtbr.com/data/mtbr/500/235106/training_plan_010406.gif

The time listed is a length of a bike ride. Yoga session on Mondays and Wednesdays last 80-90 min, and they can be pretty intense since it's more of a Power Yoga.

I do three days a week and for some reason, I'm feeling like 5 days a week in the gym is too much. I ran track in high school and college and played football in high school and even ran a marathon. I never ran five days a week as a workout. I don't know what cardio means, but trust me I think 5 days is a bit too much.

I have a very fast metabolism and very, very low blood pressure, (the athletic type),if I stay in the gym longer than 40-45 minutes I was probably talking to someone. I know my workout won't work for everybody because it depends on what you're going for. Here it is:

Day 1)
Deadlifts 4x6
Chin-ups 4xmax
One arm rows 4x8
Barbell curls 4x8

REST!!!

Day 2)
Dips 4x8
Incline Bench 4x8
Military Press 4x8
Lat raises 3x8
Bench Press 4x8

REST!!!

Day 3)
Squats 4x8
Toe Raises 3x10
Hamstrings 4x8
Crunches/Sit-ups 4xmax
(I do treadmill, bike, or stair machine for about 20 mins with my legs)

REST!!
REST!!

Day 1 again......

I try to go 3 x a week. I do 15-20 minutes on either the elliptical or the stairstepper to warm up, then 30-40 on the treadmill. Then I stretch and do situps and pushups, that usually takes about 20-30 minutes.

I do yoga once or twice a week in between as well for muscle toning and stretching.

I DO NOT lift weights.

Be careful with the treadmill, you could develop what I call "crunchy knees." Everytime I bend down or squat, it sounds like I broke both my legs.

I work out six days a week - usually around 15-16 hours/week when I'm "training" (I do ultra/Ironman distance triathlons). My heaviest training weeks I usually do: Three runs per week - two that are 45-60 minutes, and one that's anywhere from 2-3 hours. Three (sometimes four) bike rides (or spins) per week - two that are an 60-90 minutes, and one long ride that gets up to 6 hours. I swim twice a week (I should do more but I'm way lazy when it comes to swimming!) and lift twice a week. I also try to get some yoga in there somewhere!

Its a lot of work but sooooooooooo worth it!!!!

When I'm not training, I work out pretty much everyday but waaaaaaaaay less!!!!
