Things to talk about to get to know someone

What questions or topics would be good things to talk about when you just meet someone, or are on a date with them? I'm having a hard time coming up with open ended questions to ask.

    Hmmm...

best vacation they've ever been on...

    teacher who most inspired them...

person they'd most like to meet (living or dead)...

    best birthday/Christmas/etc present...

And just follow up with "why" or "when did you go there" etc?

    Good luck!

Ask them who they'd get to play them if their life were to be made into a movie, I always ask this, I always find people's answers interesting.

If they could have a dinner with 5 people of any time period (dead, alive and from any type of life) who would they have and why?

If they were deserted on an island what 5 things would they bring?

Favorite flavor of ice cream. Toppings?

Best thing they got away with when they were a kid....or what they were like growing up.

cant you just ask this person simple things like what their interests are and what they do for a living? or music or movies?

I'm with kimmer. You don't want people to feel like they're out on job interviews. You can talk about interests, families, jobs, places you guys have traveled to, and ... this sounds weird, but viewpoints on where you live now/where you'd like to live. If you don't know each other but you live in the same place, you have a lot of common ground with your experiences there.

    i ask them things like:

    * if my head were made of veal (whch or course it is not) how much do they think it would be worth
    * who do they think would win a fight between a dog and a monkey and why
    * why did yogi bear wear a tie, but no pants

i have asked some of those type of oddball questions - i think it is a little more creative than "what's your sign". those questions either put poeple off or make them laugh and think a bit......

I tend to get really nervous and say ridiculous off-the-wall things. I once told this guy "I made an entire sculpture out of cheese once. It weighed 3.5 pounds, and I spent $22 on cheese products. I thought it would be fun, and no, I wasn't drunk." The poor guy had to laugh, because he had NO idea where that came from...oh man, that was a disastrous date...
