Alternative careers for teachers?

Hi all...
After grad school and year of teaching in public school, I decided that this is not the career for me right now. I think I had a hard time getting used to the politics and culture, although I loved working with the kids. I know other teachers on here could atest to that!
Any ideas on what other types of jobs I could pursue? I have done the camp director/tutoring scene and I am more interested in curriculum development and educational publishing. Unfortunately a lot of these jobs seem to require several years of teaching experience or fluency in publishing apps. that I'm not familiar with. Ideas on how to get started in this area? I have also thought of non-profit work.
Any input?

Corporate training is an option for people with teaching degrees. Basically you teach people how to do their jobs.

Yep, curriculum development and training are great options. It's adult education, which might make a difference.

I don't know how transferable my skills as an elementary teacher would be to the corporate arena, but definitely worth looking into.

I'm looking into it right now too. Look for the larger corperations- they're usually the ones who are looking for people.

If you want to go back to schoo, go into Educational Psychology. Learn about how people learn and use that knowledge to help people educate others better.

I just had a quick question for you (being a teacher), are teaching only mostly hired for the beginning of the year or is there opportunities to start halfway through? Like lets say you weren't hired to start in September, are you basically out of luck for working as a teacher that year?

You can apply to sub in most districts throughout the year and this is a good way to get your foot in the door. I know of several teachers that started long-term subbing in the middle of the year. It varies by district, but when I was in grad school, I basically started applying like crazy in January and had a position by spring. I was lucky though, as most newer teachers got picked up during summer or even a few weeks into school as enrollment settled. Of course, the need for teachers also varies by area.

ahh, okay, that's good to know. I'm thinking about pursuing a career in this field and that was one thing that kind of concerned me.
