discussion on Getting into the competitive IT world

Has anyone had any success getting into the competitive IT world. The Forbes 100 etc. doing big-time development projects, etc. that have propelled you, led to future success, allowed you to keep a perspective on future technologies, enabled you to keep up with the future technologies?

Do those "grooming" headhunter/companies help?

If possible, could you elaborate?

Yes, yes, and yes. I've been working full time in IT for almost 10 years. I've always had a nack for it, since I got my first computer... Starting out in help desk stuff, now doing systems engineering for nationwide federal government projects..

Try to always stay ahead of the technology curve, keeping yourself in the niche market -- that's where you're make the most money.. my past niche was Windows (server), then I saw Linux coming into play, and moved to that before it got big.. Haven't identified what the next niche is yet, but Linux is working well for me.

What's your degree in? I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that he can get into something like that locally w/o having a bigillion degrees in comp sci and the works..

what kind of background do you have? how much/what kind of experience?

my husband works in IT for a top financial services firm. we were just talking about this this morning, since he's hiring for a position in his dept. he said that the grads coming out of top schools that he's seen all want to do development (not the position he's hiring for) and he's looking for someone with a decent background, but mostly the key is attitude, a good work ethic and a willingness to learn. apparently he's not finding a lot of that. especially the attitude thing.

you should see some of the resumes he's getting. scary. one of the cover letters that he got was like the ransom note someone leaves you when they kidnap your kid. i mean, i know these guys are techies, but how can you get hired for a postition like this if you can't use spellcheck or write a coherent sentence?
